Technical specification of electric water pump for vehicle
engine
1 Scope
This standard specifies the technical requirements, test methods, inspection items,
technical conditions for packaging and transportation of electric water pumps for
automobile engines.
This standard applies to electric water pumps for vehicle engines, which have a power
supply voltage of 12 V. The electric water pumps for vehicle engines, which have other
power supply voltages, can refer to this standard.

3 Terms and definitions
Terms and definitions, as defined in referenced documents in this document, as well as
the following terms and definitions, apply to this document.
3.1
Rated condition of electric water pump
The operating conditions of the electric water pump, under the voltage, rated flow,
head conditions, which are specified in the technical documents.
4 Technical requirements
4.1 General technical requirements
4.1.1 Electric water pumps shall comply with the provisions of this standard. It shall be
manufactured according to the drawings and technical documents, which are approved
by the prescribed procedures.
4.1.2 The surface of the electric water pump shall have no defects, obvious color
difference, deformation, cracks; the sealing surface shall have no scratches; the
chamfers of the sealing ring groove shall be smooth AND shall be free from flash.
4.1.3 The starting and normal operating voltage range of the electric water pump is 12
V ± 4 V.
4.1.4 The recommended operating temperature range of the electric water pump is -
40 °C ~ 125 °C, OR meet the requirements of relevant technical conditions.
4.5.6 Reverse voltage
Carry out the test according to 5.5.6. The reverse voltage performance of the electric
water pump shall at least reach the level C, which is defined in GB/T 28046.1-2011.
4.6 Environmental adaptability
4.6.1 Temperature gradient
Carry out the test according to 5.6.1. The temperature gradient performance of the
electric water pump shall reach the level A, which is defined in GB/T 28046.1-2011.
4.6.2 Cold water shock
Conduct the test according to 5.6.2. The cold water shock performance of the electric
water pump shall reach the level A, which is defined in GB/T 28046.1-2011. In addition:
a) After the test, it shall meet the sealing performance requirements in 4.4;
b) Visual inspection after the test, there shall be no visible deformation and cracks;
c) After the test, there shall be no sticking when turning the rotor of the electric water
pump.
4.6.3 Damp heat cycle
Carry out the test according to 5.6.3. The damp heat cycle performance of the electric
water pump shall reach the level A, which is defined in GB/T 28046.1-2011.
4.7 Electromagnetic compatibility
4.7.1 Electromagnetic immunity
Carry out the test according to 5.7.1. The test results shall meet the requirements of
relevant technical documents.
4.7.2 Electromagnetic disturbance
Carry out the test according to 5.7.2. The test result shall meet the requirements of
relevant technical documents.
4.8 Reliability and durability
4.8.1 General durability
Carry out the test according to 5.8.1. The test time shall be at least 2000 h. The electric
water pump shall meet the following requirements:
a) The performance before and after the test shall meet the requirements of 4.2.
During the test and re-inspection after the test, the performance difference from
that before the test shall not exceed 5%; the sealing performance shall meet the
requirements of 4.4;
b) Check the appearance after the test; there shall be no deformation, crack, leakage;
c) After the performance re-inspection, disassemble and measure the wear of the
electric water pump's impeller, shaft, retaining ring; each wear shall meet the
requirements of the technical documents.
4.8.2 Start-stop durability
The test shall be carried out according to 5.8.2. The electric water pump shall meet the
following requirements:
a) Perform performance re-inspection after the test, which shall meet the
requirements of 4.2;
b) It can be started normally during and after the test. The variation of the start-up
time shall not exceed the requirements of the technical documents.
4.8.3 Corrosion resistance
Carry out the test according to 5.8.3. After the test, the electric water pump shall meet
the following requirements:
a) The performance and tightness re-inspection shall meet the requirements of 4.2
and 4.4;
b) The structure in contact with the cooling liquid shall have no wear and corrosion
beyond the relevant technical requirements.
4.8.4 Thermal shock
Carry out the test according to 5.8.4. After the test, the electric water pump shall meet
the following requirements:
a) Carry out performance and tightness re-inspection, which shall meet the
requirements of 4.2 and 4.4;
b) During visual inspection, it shall show no damage, visible deformation, or cracks.
4.8.5 Waterproof and dustproof
Waterproof and dustproof shall meet the requirements of IP 6K 9K. It implements the
relevant requirements of GB/T 30038.
4.8.6 Storage at low temperature
a) No damage occurs within 10 s;
b) No spontaneous combustion occurs within 60 s.
4.8.11 Salt spray test
Carry out the test according to 5.8.10. The electric water pump shall meet the following
requirements:
a) The performance and tightness re-inspection after the test shall meet the
requirements of 4.2 and 4.4;
b) The functional condition reaches the level A, which is defined in GB/T 28046.1-
2011;
c) During visual inspection, the corrosion condition of each component and marking
shall not exceed the requirements of relevant technical documents.
4.8.12 High temperature working durability
Carry out the test according to 5.8.11. The electric water pump shall meet the following
requirements:
a) The performance and tightness re-inspection after the test shall meet the
requirements of 4.2 and 4.4;
b) During and after the test, there shall be no abnormalities in starting and running;
c) During visual inspection, the pump body and impeller shall be free from leakage,
visible cracks, deformation;
d) Disassemble and measure the wear of the electric water pump's impeller, shaft,
retaining ring; each wear shall meet the requirements of relevant technical
documents.
4.8.13 Low temperature working durability
Carry out the test according to 5.8.12. The electric water pump shall meet the following
requirements:
a) The performance and tightness re-inspection after the test shall meet the
requirements of 4.2 and 4.4;
b) During and after the test, there shall be no abnormalities in starting and running;
c) During visual inspection, the pump body and impeller shall be free from leakage,
visible cracks, deformation;
d) Disassemble and measure the wear of the electric water pump's impeller, shaft,
retaining ring; each wear shall meet the requirements of relevant technical
documents.
4.8.14 Idling test
Carry out the test according to 5.8.13. The electric water pump shall meet the following
requirements:
a) Perform performance re-inspection after the test; the performance shall meet the
requirements of 4.2;
b) During the test, there is no stagnation, sharp and piercing sound, or damage;
c) Disassemble and measure the wear of the electric water pump's impeller, shaft,
retaining ring. The wear shall meet the requirements of relevant technical
documents.
4.8.15 Vibration durability
Carry out the test according to 5.8.14. The electric water pump shall meet the following
requirements:
a) The performance and tightness re-inspection after the test shall meet the
requirements of 4.2 and 4.4;
b) During and after the test, there shall be no abnormal start-up and operation failure;
c) During visual inspection, there shall be no leakage, visible deformation, or cracks;
d) There shall be no loosening of fasteners and solder joints.
5 Test method
5.1 Test conditions
5.1.1 Environmental conditions
Unless otherwise specified, the test shall be carried out in an environment, of which the
temperature is 23 °C ± 5 °C, relative humidity is 25% ~ 85%, and atmospheric pressure
is 86 ~ 106 kPa.
5.1.2 Test device
Unless otherwise specified, the closed test bench shall be assembled, according to the
provisions in 6.4 of JB/T 8126.2-2010; the steam pressure inside the closed water tank
shall be consistent with the water tank pressure of the automobile engine cooling system.
5.5.2 Overvoltage test method
The test shall be carried out under the rated operating conditions of the electric water
pump, according to the provisions in 4.3.1.1.2 of GB/T 28046.2-2011.
5.5.3 Superimposed alternating voltage test method
The test shall be carried out under the rated operating conditions of the electric water
pump, according to the provisions in 4.4.2 of GB/T 28046.2-2011.
5.5.4 Test method for ramp down and up of supply voltage
The test shall be carried out under the rated operating conditions of the electric water
pump, according to the provisions in 4.5.2 of GB/T 28046.2-2011.
5.5.5 Test method for transient change of supply voltage
The test shall be carried out under the rated operating conditions of the electric water
pump, according to the provisions in 4.6.1.2 of GB/T 28046.2-2011.
5.5.6 Reverse voltage test method
The test shall be carried out under the rated operating conditions of the electric water
pump, according to the provisions in 4.7.2 of GB/T 28046.2-2011.
5.6 Environmental adaptability test method
5.6.1 Temperature gradient test method
The test shall be carried out under the rated operating conditions of the electric water
pump, according to the provisions in 5.2.2 of GB/T 28046.4-2011. Among them, Tmax
and Tmin are the upper and lower limits of the ambient temperature, which is specified
in 4.1.4 of this document.
5.6.2 Cold water shock test method
The test shall be carried out under the rated working conditions of the electric water
pump, according to the provisions in 5.4.2 of GB/T 28046.4-2011.
5.6.3 Damp heat cycle test method
The test shall be carried out under the rated working conditions of the electric water
pump, according to the provisions in 5.6.2 of GB/T 28046.4-2011.
5.7 Electromagnetic compatibility test method
5.7.1 Electromagnetic immunity test method
The electromagnetic radiation immunity test shall be carried out according to the large
current injection method and the free field method, respectively. The frequency range
of the high current injection method is 1 MHz ~ 400 MHz; the frequency range of the
free field method is 200 MHz ~ 2.5 GHz and 2.7 GHz ~ 3.2 GHz.
The large current injection method test shall be carried out, according to GB/T 17619;
the injection current shall be carried out, according to the requirements of the technical
documents;
The free field method test shall be carried out, according to GB/T 17619; the field
strength shall be carried out, according to the requirements of the technical documents;
The anti-interference test of electrical transient conduction shall be carried out,
according to GB/T 21437.2 and GB/T 21437.3. The pulse type and severity shall be
carried out, in accordance with the relevant provisions in the standard or the
requirements of relevant technical documents;
The electrostatic discharge performance test shall be carried out, according to GB/T
19951. The test requirements include: powered state contact discharge ±2 kV and ±4
kV, air discharge ±8 kV; powered state contact discharge ±2 kV, ±4 kV, ±8 kV, air
discharge ±4 kV, ±8 kV, ±15 kV.
5.7.2 Electromagnetic disturbance test method

5 Test method
5.1 Test conditions

Unless otherwise specified, the test shall be carried out in an environment, of which the

5.6 Environmental adaptability test method
5.6.1 Temperature gradient test method
The test shall be carried out under the rated operating conditions of the electric water
pump, according to the provisions in 5.2.2 of GB/T 28046.4-2011. Among them, Tmax
and Tmin are the upper and lower limits of the ambient temperature, which is specified
in 4.1.4 of this document.
5.6.2 Cold water shock test method
The test shall be carried out under the rated working conditions of the electric water
pump, according to the provisions in 5.4.2 of GB/T 28046.4-2011.

The test shall be carried out under the rated working conditions of the electric water
pump, according to the provisions in 5.6.2 of GB/T 28046.4-2011.
5.7 Electromagnetic compatibility test method
5.7.1 Electromagnetic immunity test method
The electromagnetic radiation immunity test shall be carried out according to the large
current injection method and the free field method, respectively. The frequency range
of the high current injection method is 1 MHz ~ 400 MHz; the frequency range of the
free field method is 200 MHz ~ 2.5 GHz and 2.7 GHz ~ 3.2 GHz.
The large current injection method test shall be carried out, according to GB/T 17619;
the injection current shall be carried out, according to the requirements of the technical
documents;
