Xanthan gum for toothpaste
1 Scope
This standard specifies the requirements, test methods, inspection rules and
markings, packaging, transportation, storage and shelf life of xanthan gum for
toothpaste.
This standard is applicable to xanthan gum products which are produced by
Xanthomonas campestris as the main bacteria, starchy as the main raw
material, after specific biological fermentation, purified, dried and pulverized.

5.2 Viscosity
5.2.1 Instruments
Brook field rotary viscometer or other equivalent performance viscometer.
5.2.2 Determination conditions
a) Rotor model. No.3 rotor;
b) Rotor speed. 60 r/min;
c) Determination temperature. 24 °C ~ 25 °C.
5.2.3 Analytical procedures
5.2.3.1 PREPARE a solution containing 1% sample and 1% potassium chloride.
a) USE a clean and dry weighing paper to respectively weigh 3.0 g of sample
and potassium chloride (accurate to 0.01 g), MIX it uniformly;
b) WEIGH 294 g of distilled water into a 400 mL beaker;
c) PLACE the above water-filled beaker under the stirrer, TURN on the stirrer,
slowly ADD the mixed specimen to the water between the stirring blade
and the beaker wall, START timekeeping, CONTINUE stirring for 2 h at
the speed of 800 r/min, KEEP the temperature at 24 °C ~ 25 °C;
d) STOP stirring, TAKE out the beaker, USE the stir bar or other similar tool
to flip the solution up and down for several times.
5.2.3.2 TAKE appropriate amount of the above solution and PLACE it in a 100
mL high beaker, MAKE determination under the specified determination
conditions.
5.3 Shear performance value
5.3.1 Determination method
In accordance with the requirements of 5.2, respectively DETERMINE the
viscosity values of the No.3 rotor at the speed of 6 r/min and 60 r/min.
5.3.2 Calculation of results
The shear performance value is calculated in accordance with formula (1).
N = η1/η2 ... (1)
acid solution 2 mol/L) in a 30 mL separatory funnel, ADD 2.0 mL of solution from
the stoppered flask which had been subject to reflux treatment, MIX it uniformly,
PLACE it at room temperature for 5 min. USE 5 mL of ethyl acetate to extract
it, DISCARD the aqueous layer, USE mL of sodium carbonate standard solution
to extract the hydrazine from the ethyl acetate, PERFORM extraction for 3 times,
COLLECT the extract into a 50 mL volumetric flask, USE sodium carbonate
standard solution to dilute it to the mark.
5.7.4 Sample solution preparation
Accurately WEIGH 0.6 g of sample, TRANSFER it to a 100 mL volumetric flask,
USE water to dilute it to the mark, MIX it uniformly. TAKE 10.0 mL of this solution
in a 50 mL stoppered flask, TAKE 20 mL of 1 mol/L hydrochloric acid to the flask,
WEIGH the flask, HEAT it under reflux for 3 h, USE a serpentine coil to cool it
to prevent water vapor loss. COOL it to room temperature, REPLENISH the
moisture lost during the reflux process. PIPETTE 1.0 mL of 2,4-
Dinitrophenylhydrazine acid hydrochloride solution (1.200, hydrochloric acid
solution 2 mol/L) in a 30 mL separatory funnel, ADD 2.0 mL of solution from the
stoppered flask which had been subject to reflux treatment, MIX it uniformly,
PLACE it at room temperature for 5 min.
5.7.5 Determination
On a spectrophotometer (wavelength 375 nm), USE the 1 cm cuvette, USE the
standard solution of sodium carbonate as a blank, to determine the absorbance
of the standard solution and the sample solution. The absorbance of the sample
solution shall be equal to or higher than the absorbance of the standard solution.
5.8 Lead
It is determined in accordance with the method specified in GB 5009.12.
5.9 Total number of colonies
It is determined in accordance with the method specified in the “Hygienic
Standards for Cosmetics” of the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of
China.
5.10 Fecal coliforms
It is determined in accordance with the method specified in the “Hygienic
Standards for Cosmetics” of the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of
China.
of the production enterprise in accordance with the methods stipulated in this
standard, the product certificate shall be issued before exit-factory.
6.4 Type inspection
All items specified in the requirements of this standard are type inspection items.
Type inspection is performed once every 6 months or when one of the following
conditions occurs.
a) When major changes in raw materials, processes, equipment, personnel
and the environment may affect product performance.
b) When production resumes after a long period of production suspension.
c) When raw materials are used at new supply points;
d) When the national quality supervision agency or customer requests the
type inspection.
6.5 Decision rules
If one of the test results does not meet the requirements of this standard, it shall
be double-sampled for re-test. If one of the retest results does not meet this
standard, the entire batch of products is judged as unqualified.
If both the supplier and the buyer disagree on the quality of the product, the
arbitration institution may be selected by both parties to conduct arbitration in
accordance with the inspection methods stipulated in this standard.
7 Marking, packaging, transportation, storage, shelf
life
7.1 Marking
The packaging container shall be firmly and clearly marked. the name and
address of the manufacturer, the name and type of the product, the trademark,
the net content, the production batch number (or date of manufacture), the
standard number used, as well as “for toothpaste” or “toothpaste grade” and
the “avoiding moisture” mark in GB/T 191.
7.2 Packaging
The product shall be packaged by woven bag or paper drum which has a layer
of food-grade polyethylene bag inside, which can also be determined by both
parties.
