Methods of measurement for electronic projectors
1 Scope
This standard specifies the terms and definitions, measurement conditions,
measurement items, measurement methods, measurement results expression, etc., of
electronic projectors.
This standard applies to electronic projection type fixed resolution projectors
(hereinafter referred to as projectors), including liquid crystal display (LCD) projectors,
liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) projectors, digital light processing (DLP) projectors,
etc. Other projection methods and electronic projectors, which are used in different
occasions, can be implemented with reference to it.
2 Normative references
The following documents are essential to the application of this document. For the dated
documents, only the versions with the dates indicated are applicable to this document;
for the undated documents, only the latest version (including all the amendments) is
applicable to this standard.

3.1.4
Passive standby mode
The lower power mode, at which the projector is connected to mains power BUT
does not provide primary functions. The projector can only enter this state, after
receiving external excitation signals, such as remote control and buttons. The
projector can be returned to the working state from this mode, by the activation of
the remote control device, internal signal, etc.
3.1.5
Color light output
The light output value, which is measured by a projector, when reproducing a color
image. It is a performance indicator, that measures the ability of a color projector to
reproduce primary color signals.
3.2 Abbreviations
The following abbreviations apply to this document:
CCT: Correlated colour temperature
CIE: Commission internationale de L' Eclairage (fr)
DLP: Digital light process
LCD: Liquid crystal display
LCoS: Liquid crystal on silicon
4 General requirements for measurement
4.1 General description
Unless otherwise specified, the voltage values, which are given in this standard, are
valid values.
4.2 Performance measurement conditions
4.2.1 Environmental conditions
Unless otherwise specified, the following measurements are made, under standard
atmospheric conditions:
- Ambient temperature: 15 °C ~ 35 °C, preferably 25 °C;
- Relative humidity: 25% ~ 75%;
- Air pressure: 86 kPa ~ 106 kPa.
4.2.2 Power condition
The power conditions are as follows:
- Power supply voltage: AC 209 V ~ 231 V;
- Power frequency: 49 Hz ~ 51 Hz;
- Harmonic component: ±5%.
4.2.3 Measurement conditions
The measurement conditions are as follows:
a) The measurement shall be carried out in a dark room, where the stray illumination
is less than or equal to 0.5 lx;
b) The measurement shall use the matching lens of the projector;
c) The room volume shall be able to meet the requirements for screen size, which is
given by the projector.
4.3 Measuring instruments
4.3.1 Illuminometer
The illuminometer requirements are as follows:
a) Illuminance measurement range: 0.1 lx ~ 50000 lx:
b) Illuminance measurement accuracy: ±2% (0.1 lx ~ 10 lx), ±5% (10 lx ~ 50000 lx):
c) Chromatic values can be measured: u', v' or x, y;
d) Chromatic measurement accuracy: ±0.002.
Note: Please refer to Appendix A, for the conversion formula of (u', v') and (x, y).
4.3.2 Video signal generator
The test signal diagram shall have the following types:
- A1: Limit eight grayscale signal;
- A2: Color bar signal;
- A3: All-white field signal and all-black field signal;
-A4: Location map of uniformity test points;
- A5: Black and white window signal;
- A6: Single pixel signal;
- A7: Composite test diagram;
- A8: All-red field, all-green field, all-blue field signals;
- A9: White window signal;
- A10: All-white field, all-grey field and all-black field signals with areas A and B;
- A11: All-red field, all-green field, all-blue field signals with areas and A areas B;
- A12: Red, green, blue three primary color matrix test signal.
4.4.2 Extreme eight grayscale signal

4.4.3 Color bar signal

4.4.4 All-white field signal and all-black field signal

f) During the whole measurement process, if the input signal is re-adjusted or
replaced, it shall make the product operate stably for at least 5 minutes; then make
measurement;
g) The audio channel is not connected to the audio signal; if there is any audio output
volume adjustment, set it to the minimum position;
h) This state is the standard operating state, which remains unchanged, during the
whole measurement process. Record the relevant settings and projector state, in
the test record.
5 Measurement method of normal temperature performance
5.1 Correlated color temperature
5.1.1 Overview
This clause is to measure the correlated color temperature (CCT) of the projector, under
standard operating state.
5.1.2 Measurement steps
a) Adjust the projector to the standard operating state, which is specified in 4.6;
b) Input the all-white field signal; use a colorimeter, to measure the correlated color
temperature (CCT) of the center point of the projection surface, wherein the
center point is the P5 point of the position map of uniformity test points.
5.1.3 Presentation of measurement results
Measurement results are expressed in Kelvin (K).
5.2 Luminance output
5.2.1 Overview
This clause specifies the measurement of the luminance output of the projector, under
standard operating state.
5.2.2 Measurement steps

shaped line, in the horizontal and vertical directions of the projector. At this time,
it shall record the reproduction rate of the image, at the same time.
5.7.3 Presentation of measurement results
The measurement results are represented by TV lines.
5.8 Input format compatibility
5.8.1 Overview
This clause specifies the measurement of the playback capability of the projector, to
different input signal formats, under standard operating states.
5.8.2 Measurement steps
Change the input signal format. Then measure the limit of the corresponding human
eye distinguishable horizontal sharpness line, according to 5.7. If the measurement
result is basically unchanged, it means that the input signal format is compatible. For
downward compatibility, it is allowed to reduce the horizontal line of sharpness that is
distinguishable by the human eye.
5.8.3 Presentation of measurement results
List all compatible formats.
5.9 Focusing distance and image size
5.9.1 Overview
This clause specifies the measurement of the closest projection distance, the minimum
projection area, the farthest projection distance, the maximum projection area, that the
projector can image clearly. The projection distance is the vertical distance, from the
center point of the outermost layer of the projector lens to the projection screen.
For reflective projectors, this is measured in accordance with the method, which is
specified in the product specification.
5.9.2 Measurement steps
a) Use a composite test diagram. Place the projector at the closest projection distance
and minimum projection area. Adjust the focus distance, to make the image clear.
Then measure and record the projection distance and projection diagonal size, at
this time;
b) Input the white window signal; change the level of the window signal, from 20%
to 90%, in steps of 10%, to measure the color coordinates u' and v', at the center
of the white window.
5.14.3 Presentation of measurement results
The measurement results are expressed as the differences Δu' and Δv', between the
chromaticity coordinates of each level and the chromaticity coordinates at 50% gray
level.
5.15 Operating noise
5.15.1 Overview
This clause specifies the measurement of the human eye's audible noise, which is
emitted by the projector, under standard operating state.
5.15.2 Measurement steps
a) Input 100% color bar signal to the projector, to let it work for 15 minutes. Make
measurements, according to the relevant provisions of GB/T 6882. Add the A-
weighting network to the measurement;
b) The measurement distance is 1 m, in the normal direction of the center point of
the upper, lower, left, right, front, rear surfaces.
Where there is a dispute, place the projector in an ambient temperature of 23 °C ±
2 °C, for testing.
5.15.3 Presentation of measurement results
The operating noise is the average value of the sound pressure level, in the operating
noise of the 6 surfaces, expressed in decibels [dB(A)].
5.16 Coincidence error
5.16.1 Overview
This clause specifies the measurement of the degree to which the three-primary color
pixels of the projector are finally combined into one point after projection.
5.16.2 Measurement steps
a) Adjust the projector to the standard operating state, which is specified in 4.6;
b) Input a single-pixel signal. Use a magnifying glass, to observe the coincidence
diagram; calculate the number of non-red pixels, in areas A and B; record them;
e) Under the standard operating state of the projector, input the all-green field test
diagram; calculate the number of non-green pixels, in areas A and B; record them;
f) Under the standard operating state of the projector, input the all-blue field test
diagram; calculate the number of non-blue pixels, in areas A and B; record them.
5.17.3 Presentation of measurement results
The measurement result is the statistic total number of defect points in area A and that
total number of defect points in area B.
5.18 Trapezoid correction capability
5.18.1 Overview
This clause specifies the measurement of the maximum elevation angle of the projector,
when it is placed horizontally, under standard operating states.
5.18.2 Measurement steps
Input the composite test diagram. Use an angle ruler, to measure the angle, between the
center line of the projection beam and the vertical line of the projector, which faces the
screen, expressed in degrees. Within the range below this included angle, the projector
can display a basic rectangle, that is, the deviation between the upper and lower side
lengths is less than 5%. When measuring, it is allowed to perform trapezoid correction
first.
5.18.3 Presentation of measurement results

1 Scope
